Pursuant to § 9 (1) item f) of the WU By-Laws, WU has established a Research Committee.

The responsibilities of this committee include the following matters:

   ► Research evaluation
   ► Research communication
   ► Research infrastructure
   ► Academic integrity in research

According to the Directive on Responsible Research and Academic Integrity, the Research Committee is also the point of contact in cases of doubt related to research integrity. In this connection, the Research Committee is available to provide advisory, support, and mediation services to WU employees.

Pursuant to § 9a of the WU By-Laws, a Research Ethics Board has been established as part of this committee (§ 9 [1] item f) to deal with ethical issues in research. In this connection, the Research Committee’s responsibilities include the following matters:

  • In the event that the Research Ethics Board issues a statement that expresses ethical concerns or contains recommendations not deemed appropriate by the respective project applicant, the applicant can file an appeal with the Rector’s Council member responsible for research.

  • In such cases, the appropriate Rector’s Council member will seek the opinion of one or more international experts, although this procedure may be waived upon approval of the Research Committee.

  • Applicants have the right to comment on the choice of expert reviewers.

  • Based on the expert opinions received, the Research Committee will then proceed to issue a further ethical assessment

The Senate Office supports the committee in all of its responsibilities, activities and meetings, it assists the committee chair, and its acts as a liaison between the committee and the Senate or the Senate chair.

The members of the Research Committee have been appointed for the term of office from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2025.
