Your Research Project

The acquisition and implementation of publicly funded third-party projects play an increasingly important role in career development within and outside the academic world. When applying for a professorship, for example, the strength of a researcher's third-party funding is crucial to standing out in the application process. Excellence programs of the FWF and the EU as well as experience with various national and international funding bodies, are essential. Not to mention the career aspects: Research projects promote interdisciplinary teamwork, broaden perspectives and are fun!

Project Cicle

A research project can be divided into five main phases, each of which involves different tasks and different stakeholders. At WU, depending on the project phase, the Research Service Center, Controlling, Personnel Office, Legal Services and Payroll Office are important points of contact.

The first phase begins with the funding search, which involves identifying a suitable funding program and understanding the relevant call criteria. Once this step has been completed, the application follows, which is usually submitted via a digital platform provided by the respective funding body. The Research Service Center provides support in the search for suitable funding opportunities and during the application phase.

If the application is approved, the project officially starts: this usually involves signing the contract, updating the budget planning and hiring project staff. At the start of the project, it is particularly important to read the funding agreement in detail so that all conditions and requirements are clearly understood, and implementation can proceed smoothly.

During project implementation, the project team carries out all planned activities and work packages. At this stage, it is particularly important to follow the reporting requirements carefully in order to regularly document progress and meet the requirements of the funding bodies. At the same time, continuous financial monitoring is essential to ensure that the budget is adhered to and that all financial resources are used correctly.

A final report summarizing the results of the project is usually prepared at the end of the project. Financial aspects, such as the final accounts, must also be considered. It is essential that all expenses are properly documented and that the deadlines for submitting financial evidence are strictly adhered to, in accordance with the funding agency's guidelines. In some cases, audits may be required to ensure transparency and proper use of funds.

Each of these phases involves numerous work steps and coordination processes that require precise planning and coordination. Successful implementation therefore requires professional collaboration in the area of research management.
