Academic Staff Council

Welcome to the new semester!

Campus

This week marks the start of the new summer semester. For some WU teachers, this means switching to the new CANVAS learning platform. Since we keep receiving questions from the staff regarding Canvas, we have prepared a separate article containing the answers we have received from the responsible service units.

We would like to take this opportunity to promote the new location of the Teacher's Lounge, which is available to all WU teachers for breaks between classes or for preparation before a class. You can find the Teacher’s Lounge in the LC building, room 1.04 . The lounge is equipped with a desk, couch, dining table, printer and a small kitchen. The Academic Staff Council supplies the Teacher's Lounge with coffee and tea. Please feel free to enjoy and let us know if anything is missing (wiss.betriebsrat@wu.ac.at). Also, you can book this room for meetings or conferences during teaching-free time. Send your requests to wiss.betriebsrat@wu.ac.at.

We would also like to raise awareness for WU’s regulation regarding teaching in case of illness. The WUPOL “Regelung für Lehrende im Krankheitsfall” (currently, there is no official English version available) contains WU’s regulation for teaching in case of illness. You can find an English summary of the contents on our webpage.

In addition, we would like to report that the academic works council met in February for a closed meeting to revise and update its main topics of interest ahead of the next Rector’s Council period. We plan to communicate these topics of interest on our website in due time. First, we would like to discuss them with the designated new Rectorate team, following the latest election of the Vice-Rectors by the University Board.

Finally, we would like to promote the Operational Agreement on Sabbaticals. So far, academic staff members at WU have made little use of this agreement. It offers the possibility to take a longer period of time off (e.g. for a longer vacation leave) that has been “banked” by the employee in advance. During the banking phase, the employee continues to work the contractually agreed working hours but receives reduced pay. During the leave phase, the employee is not required to work at all but continues to receive the reduced pay. More explanations (like configurations and requirements) can be found here.
