Relevant regulations for course delivery
The course delivery formats complement existing regulations and processes for teaching activities at WU.
Study law regulations
The following study law regulations are particularly relevant to course delivery formats:
Universities Act 2022
By-Laws of the Vienna University of Economics and Business
Curricula
Examination Regulations
Directives for holding exams and dealing with fraud cases
Directive distance learning and online exams.
Workload teachers and students
Teacher Workload
According to the collective agreement, 1 credit hour corresponds to approx. 45 working hours per semester.
The credit hours of a course also determine the planned number of contact hours:
A semester has approx. 15 teaching weeks, i.e. 1 credit hour corresponds to approx. 3 working hours per teaching week, whereby
45 minutes per week of instruction can be counted for one course unit (contact hours).
The remaining 135 minutes per credit hour and teaching week are calculated as a lump sum for all related activities. In accordance with the collective agreement, independent teaching activities (conducting courses) also include:
preparation for the courses
the supervision of students during the courses
the taking of exams
participation in evaluation measures
the administrative activities connected with the performance of teaching duties
Due to half-semester or block courses, the respective workload can of course be distributed differently over the semester. The announced course units/contact hours are an indicator of the teacher's workload, but these can be reduced, especially in the case of the course type "research seminar" or the course delivery format "blended", if this makes didactic sense.
Student Workload
1 ECTS credit corresponds to approx. 25 hours of total effort for the course, this includes among others
Attendance at classes,
Preparation and follow-up of course units,
Doing homework and other assignments for assessment outside the classroom,
Exam Preparation,
Exam time.
Student attendance requirements
The attendance requirement in synchronous course units is regulated by the course type (Examination Regulations) or specified by the teacher in the syllabus before the start of the semester.
For positive completion, the defined attendance requirement must be fulfilled, depending on the course delivery format at the Campus WU or online. Absences must be communicated to the teacher in advance and any excuses beyond the student's control (e.g. illness) must be proven. Proven technical problems beyond the student's control are also considered an excuse for absences for online participation. The regulations of the examination regulations regarding absences during performances for student assessment (in particular the need for alternate dates) apply.
There are various options for checking attendance requirements, e.g.:
In the classroom and online: WU Check-in (is currently being revised and is expected to be available again in the course of 2023)
In the classroom: printed attendance lists from the course admin
Whether students actively or passively participate in a course is not a determining factor in meeting the attendance requirement.
"Location obligation" in teaching
The regulations of the collective agreement as well as the WU policy on the relaxed location obligation for academic staff members apply to research. For teaching, the WU or Vienna is usually the intended place of employment, even in the case of online teaching.
