Buenos Aires Global Marketing Program 2023

Gamze Ayran 5

How did you learn about the Buenos Aires Global Marketing Program and why did you choose to participate?
I saw the Go Global trade show while I was going to the library to study and just wanted to take a peek. Through the conversation with Christina Kampe, my attention was piqued. Also, it has always been a dream of mine to go to Latin America. This program was the perfect combination of studying and realizing one of my life dreams for me.

How did participating in the Buenos Aires Global Marketing Program help you in terms of your personal / professional / academic development?
Thanks to this experience, I can say that I have grown personally and academically. I have learned that it pays to be courageous and curious in life. Through this trip, I also realized how important the living environment is to the quality of life. Every day I was fascinated by the culture and the serenity of the Argentines. "vamos viendo" was the motto of life for most of them and maybe for me from now on. I also realized that the more languages you know, the easier it is to converse in a foreign language. At the beginning of the trip, I didn't know a word of Spanish, today I can say that I understand Spanish, and it was only thanks to French that I somehow managed to find my way around Argentina. According to my flat mates, the conversations were fun to watch. I also loved that there was no place for disrespect and discrimination. Argentinian people do only know the word discrimination from their dictionary. These three weeks in South America broadened my horizons and allowed me to meet great personalities. It has been one of the most memorable experiences in my bachelor's program at WU so far.
The input from the professors, especially Ms. Koris, made me think critically about the industry. The professors' professional experience also allowed us to get a lot of input from the field. It was very exciting to hear how things work in reality. Working with Argentines on a project showed me that soft skills are very important in real life. It was relieving to see that "vamos viendo" was not the work mentality in our group work.

What can you tell us about the academic program and the lecturers? What was your impression?
The program is perfectly tailored to the three weeks. You can work intensively on marketing in three weeks without it becoming monotonous nor exhausting.
The lectureres were articulate, excellent in their field and interesting personalities. Since we had three different presenters every three weeks, each week felt like a breath of fresh air. You could also see the cultural differences in the lecturing.

How did you like the social and cultural program? Did you have enough opportunities to make new contacts?
The social and cultural program in the first week was a nice experience. The tour guide for the city tour was pleasant to listen to. I was fascinated how much knowledge she has about several cultures. A few students and Prof. Koris even booked a private cemetery visit with her.
We had enough opportunities to get in touch with everyone. I am happy that eight of us booked the flights together and many of us lived together in Airbnbs. Thanks to this we connected easily between us and tried to stay in touch with the Argentinians.
Thanks to Lea Pressl, we also had the opportunity to visit the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKO). Since she had a contact, she organized a very interesting visit to the WKO for us one afternoon. I learned a lot about the economy in Buenos Aires and got more information about volunteering abroad for the WKO. It was even more fun to discuss macroeconomics in Buenos Aires with Ms. Marlene Dobry, since I had last taken the macroeconomics exam at WU.

Please give us a short overview of your expenses for the program (travel, accommodation, food, activities...) to help future participants to estimate the financial aspect.
Travel:

Public Transport: 1,50€
Accommodation: Airbnb: 479,91€ Food+ Drinks: 240,00€ Acitivites: 200,00€ (Iguazu trip – flight and pocket money)
At night it was much safer to take a cabify/taxi and in areas like La Boca it was necessary to take a cabify/taxi to be in safe hands

What was your personal highlight / your favorite memory about this program?
The Iguazu waterfalls were my personal highlight. A hike of more than eight hours through the rainforest, after taking a natural shower under the falls, was a unique experience. After reaching a viewpoint, we took a nap with the sound of the falls in the background. It was amazing. I will never forget how my five senses were touched by the rainforest and the waterfalls. The wonderful smell of citrus, earth and a foreign scent that I have never smelled before, the eye-catching colors of the plants that you could observe, the warm weather and sun rays that you felt on your skin, the orchestra of insects and birds for the ears and the taste of the waterfall (when we were under the waterfall I tasted it ☺ )

Would you like to share anything else / further statements about the Buenos Aires Global Marketing Program?
With this opportunity I want to say thank everyone who organized this program. Even though it was only three weeks of an abroad experience, I get to know and experienced a lot.
