New WU University Board complete

WU’s new University Board held its constituent meeting on April 2, 2013. Ewald Novotny, Governor of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB), was unanimously appointed as the fifth member of the Board at the meeting. Brigitte Jilka was elected as Chair of the new Board, and Stephan Koren will act as Deputy Chair.

Brigitte Jilka has been a member of the WU University Board since 2008, and was elected as Chair of the five-person committee by unanimous vote. She is taking over from former OeNB Governor Klaus Liebscher, who had to leave the Board because Board membership is limited by law to a maximum of ten years. Monika Lindner and Wolfgang Weber left the Board for the same reason this year.

New WU University Board members

Brigitte Jilka (head of the Vienna city planning department) and Stephan Koren, CEO of Österreichische Volksbanken-AG (VBAG), are joined by three new members of the University Board: Silvia Angelo, Department Head at the Chamber of Labor, Thomas Uher, Member of the Board of Directors of the Erste Bank der österreichischen Sparkassen AG, and OeNB Governor Ewald Novotny.

Duties of the University Board

At Austrian universities, the University Board’s work is similar to that of a company’s supervisory board. Members may not be employees of the university or employees of the Federal Ministry for Science and Research. The Board’s most important responsibilities include electing a Rector based on a shortlist of three candidates provided by the Senate, electing Vice-Rectors based on the Rector’s nominations, and approving the university’s strategic development and organization plans, the draft of the Performance Agreement with the Ministry, and the university budget proposal. The term of office is five years.
