WU mobility grant (exchange semester/year)

On this website, you will find information for WU students who need financial support and who have already been allocated an exchange place abroad.

General information

  • The WU mobility grant provides financial support for your stay abroad at one of our partner universities in overseas and selected countries.

  • Eligible destinations include Africa, America, Asia, Australia, Great Britain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, and Ukraine.

  • The federal study grant (German: Studienbeihilfe) and the Austrian aid for study abroad (German: BAS = Beihilfe für ein Auslandsstudium) as well as other grants can be obtained additionally. Please note that you must report funding from other grant-awarding authorities to the International Office.

  • Per study cycle, you can receive a maximum of one WU mobility grant.

  • There is no legal claim to the award of a WU mobility grant.

Prerequisites & requirements

  • For degree program students allocated for a stay at a WU partner university. Here is what you need to know:

    • You must be actively enrolled at WU (including paying the ÖH fee during your stay abroad).

    • You need to physically stay at the host institution's location (even if you are taking online courses).

    • Your stay abroad should last between three and nine months.

  • Minimum academic achievement: The grant is linked to your academic achievements. You need to earn a minimum of 15 ECTS credits, which must be recognized as curriculum-specific modules upon your return to WU.

  • Important: If you do not meet the minimum requirement, you may have to pay back the grant. For stays up to five months, you must earn at least 15 ECTS credits. For stays longer than five months, the minimum requirement is 30 ECTS credits.

  • If necessary, you can provide proof of academic progress. If you are writing your master's thesis abroad, you will need to get a progress confirmation form signed (available upon request from Martina Stalitzer).

Financial information

  • The WU mobility grant is a subsidy grant and is subject to budget availability. Depending on your target region, you can expect the following grant amounts:

  • The WU mobility grant will be paid out by WU in two installments. The first installment will be the total amount of the awarded grant minus €200.

  • The second installment (€200) will be paid after your return, provided all required documents have been submitted on time.
