WU sees increase in bachelor and master program graduates

In the 2011/12 academic year, a total of 2,908 students graduated from WU. Most notably, WU experienced a significant increase in bachelor and master graduates. This is a clear indication that WU has made substantial headway in the implementation of the Bologna process.

The number of graduates from WU’s bachelor, master, and doctoral programs in the academic year 2011/12 was higher as compared to the previous year. 1,378 students graduated from bachelor programs (+28%), 283 completed one of WU’s fourteen master programs (+128%), and 102 earned doctoral degrees (+6%). At the same time, graduations from the expiring diploma programs decreased.

Bachelor system in place at WU since 2006

WU switched its program portfolio to the three-tier Bologna system, consisting of bachelor, master, and doctoral level programs, in the winter semester 2006/07. The first bachelor students graduated in the academic year 2008/09. Since then, the number of bachelor, master, and doctoral graduates has been rising steadily. “We are very pleased with the graduation statistics. They are a clear indication that WU has made substantial headway in implementing the structural changes required by the Bologna system. Thanks to its English-taught master programs with limited admission, WU meets international standards when it comes to the number of students who graduate by the end of the standard program duration,” says WU Rector Christoph Badelt. “In only a few years, the transition to the three-tier system will be complete in all of Austria,” he predicts.

WU’s student body

A total of 23,584 students were enrolled at WU in the fall of 2012. A slight decrease in the overall number of students was recorded, which can be attributed to the expiration of the old diploma programs. A significant increase was observed in the total number of students enrolled in master programs (+22.5%), which rose to slightly over 2,200. About 1,000 of these students were just starting out in their master programs. The number of newly enrolled bachelor students rose as well, climbing to almost 3,700, up roughly 10% from the winter semester 2011/12.
