Highlights and News

FWF-ASTRA Awards (FWF) (deadline: autumn 2024)

Starting in the fall of 2024, the FWF will be launching a new career funding program called the FWF ASTRA Awards. This funding will help advanced postdocs in Austria make the leap to the top of their research field.Application guidelines are currently being developed and are expected to be available from August 2024. Webinar on May 29, 2024.

Funding period and funding amount:

  • From €500,000 up to a maximum of €1 million for a period of five years

  • An additional €200,000 tenure package for ASTRA principal investigators who are granted a position with a permanent employment commitment upon fulfillment of a qualification agreement (e. g. tenure-track position) or a permanent academic leadership position (professorship or equivalent position) within the first three years of the project term.

Climate-Neutral City Mission - Technologies and Innovations for a Climate-Neutral City 2024

The call „Technologies and Innovations for a Climate-Neutral City 2024“ addresses specific applied research questions and R&D services that will contribute to the development of climate-neutral, resilient and climate-change-adapted cities, neighbourhoods and buildings.

The projects funded by the BMK (Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology) have different thematic focal points; depending on this, there are two submission deadlines! 

  • Deadline 11 July 2024 for the focal points Urban Pilot Demonstrations and Pioneer Neighbourhoods, Exploratory Projects for Pioneer Small Towns, R&D Services   

  • Deadline 26 September 2024  for the focal points Urban Technology Developments, Urban System Innovations, Urban Pilot Demonstrations and Pioneer Neighbourhoods and Qualification Networks

From the beginning of April, the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action (Horizon Europe) will offer the following Postdoctoral Fellowship, (for further funding tracks, see European programmes below):

Preparation: ERC Advanced Grant (deadline: 29 August 2024)

ERC Advanced Grants support established top researchers who want long-term funding to pursue a ground-breaking, ambitious project. The call is open to all topics and disciplines. Applications are assessed reviewed on the basis of scientific excellence. 

ESPRIT (FWF) (no deadlines)

The ESPRIT program (Early-Stage Program: Research - Innovation - Training) is intended to improve the skills and support the professional development of researchers from all disciplines early in their research careers by giving them the opportunity to lead an independent research project. European Funding

Horizon Europe

Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation. It tackles climate change, helps to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and boosts the EU’s competitiveness and growth.

As part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (Pillar I – Excellent Science), submissions can be made to several funding programmes from the beginning of April:

  • MSCA Doctoral Networks 2024 Doctoral programmes submitted by a transnational consortium of public and/or private organisations (universities, companies, etc.); Deadline: 27 November 2024; FFG Training zur Antragstellung; mehr Informationen

  • MSCA Staff Exchanges 2024 Promotion of short-term exchanges of scientific, technical and administrative staff between organisations in different countries, disciplines and/or economic sectors; Deadline: 05 March 2025

  • MSCA International Cooperation 2024 Promotion of international cooperation in the area of MSCA Horizon Europe; Deadline: 4 September 2024

  • MSCA COFUND 2024 Promotion of international cooperation in the area of MSCA Horizon Europe; Deadline: 06 February 2025           

Pillar II – Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness is designed to contribute to the EU's industrial and socio-political objectives and is divided into six thematic clusters (Health, Culture, Creativity & Inclusive Societies, Civil Security for Society, Digital, Industry & Space, Climate, Energie & Mobility and Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture & Environment). Cluster 3, 4 and 5 currently contain open calls for proposals:

Cluster 3 Civil Security for Society responds to the challenges arising from persistent security threats, including cybercrime, as well as natural and man-made disasters.

Cluster 4 Digital, Industry and Space supports competitive and trusted technologies for a European industry with global leadership in key areas, enabling production and consumption.

  • A human-centred and ethical development of digital and industrial technologies HORIZON-CL4-2024-HUMAN (Deadline: 18 September 2024)

Cluster 5 Climate, Energy and Mobility aims to fight climate change by better understanding its causes, evolution, risks, impacts and opportunities, and by making the energy and transport sectors more climate and environment-friendly, more efficient and competitive, smarter, safer and more resilient.

  • Safe, Resilient Transport and Smart Mobility services for passengers and goods HORIZON-CL5-2024-D6-01 (Deadline: 5 September 2024)

  • Sustainable, secure and competitive energy supply HORIZON-CL5-2024-D3-02 (Deadline: 21 January 2025)

  • Efficient, sustainable and inclusive energy use HORIZON-CL5-2024-D4-02 (Deadline: 21 January 2025)

EU-Missionen Climate & Cities

LIFE

LIFE is the EU programme for environmental, nature and climate protection. The LIFE funding programme will support the transition to clean energy and work together with other programmes to achieve the EU target of climate neutrality by 2050. At the LIFE Infoday 2024 (13 June 2024) the most important key data on the 2024 call for proposals will be presented. 

COST 2024: European Cooperation in Science and Technology

COST supports networking in all fields of science and technology in Europe and worldwide. COST is open to all persons from the academic and non-academic sectors. An important prerequisite is a nationally funded research project (contract research, funding from research promotion funds, private funding from companies, self-financing and/or other funding). CERV

A new Call for Proposals des EU Action Grants in the field of European Remembrance under the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Value Programme (CERV) with 4 calls for tender has been published; Deadline: 06 June 2024

Joint Transnational Calls

These calls are transnational programmes in the European Research Area, which are submitted both at national (usually via the FFG's eCall portal) and European or transnational level.

  • THCS Call 2: Tender for the Cofunded Partnership Transforming Health and Care Systems. The European Partnership THCS is a co-funded initiative under Horizon Europe. The aim is to contribute to the transformation of health and care systems through research, development and innovation. The initiative focuses on funding R&D&I projects. The second call for proposals under the new initiative is dedicated to the topic of „Innovate to Prevent: Personalised Prevention in Health and Care Services“; Deadline: 14. May 2024

  • JPI MYBL transnational Call 2024: This transnational call Labour force shortages within the long-term care sector within the Joint Programming Initiative More Years Better Lives focuses on innovative strategies and solutions for attracting and retaining care workers in view of the existing labour shortage in the field of long-term care in Europe; End of transnational submission deadline: 14 May 2024; End of national submission deadline: 16 May 2024 via FFG's eCall portal. National Funding

Collective Research 2024 (Submission via FFG, call for tenders continuously open) 

Collective Research 2024 supports cooperative research projects whose results are available to a technology sector in a traditional or current field, e.g. digitalisation, climate, environment, mobility, energy. These projects are usually applied for by research institutes or interest groups and must be co-financed either by several companies or by financial contributions from associations or other interest groups.

Post-DocTrack (ÖAW) (Deadline: 15 May 2024)

The OeAW awards up to eight fellowships per year to holders of a doctorate or PhD in the humanities and social and cultural sciences in order to assist in the transition to the post-doc phase.

In particular, the aim is to support: the completion of publications resulting from a doctoral thesis; the development of a candidate’s own research project for applying to national or international funding bodies; the development of (international) networks and cooperation. More information

COMET-Project Call 2024 (Submission via FFG, Deadline 22 October 2024) 

The aim of COMET projects is to carry out high-quality research in co-operation between science and industry with a medium-term perspective and clearly defined topics with future development potential. COMET projects contribute to the initiation of new product, process and service innovations.

Regional Talents 2024 (Submission via FFG, Deadline: 02 December 2024)

Regional Talents 2024 enables comprehensive and sustainable networking of educational institutions with business and research. The focus is on the development and implementation of diverse, attractive educational programmes for children and young people relating to research, technology and innovation in the fields of science and technology.
At least one scientific partner and five educational institutions are mandatory for participation in the call.

International Communication (ÖFG) (next deadlines: 09 June 2024, 06 October 2024)
This research funding scheme provides funding for trips abroad and will give guest researchers the opportunity to come to Austria. The funding is aimed at junior researchers demonstrating academic excellence, who have been unable to receive sufficient funding from other institutions either on formal grounds or due to a shortage of resources. MAX KADE (ÖAW) (Deadline: 25 June 2024)

This programme of the Max Kade Foundation in New York supports scholars from all research disciplines who wish to visit the USA for research purposes. More information

WU Internal Funding

Bonus to cover caretaking costs during business travel
WU would like to support researchers with caretaking responsibilities or care needs. Researchers should not have to limit their international network building activities, which are such a key factor for academic success, because of caretaking responsibilities or care needs. Caretaking responsibilities or care needs include not only childcare, but also the care of spouses or partners in need of constant care or the care of elderly parents or grandparents.     Award of the Juristische Blätter (Deadline: 31 May 2024)
    The Verlag Österreich awards the Juristische Blätter Prize for outstanding scientific legal work. More Information (only in German)

    Award of the the Austrian Notary's Office (Deadline: 31 May 2024)
    Every two years, the Austrian Chamber of Notaries supports outstanding practice-oriented academic work that promotes law without dispute through notarial activity. More Information (only in German)

    AK Science Award (AK Upper Austria) (Deadline: 30 June 2024)
    The Chamber of Labour for Upper Austria awards an annual science prize for scientific work and research that serves to improve the working and living conditions of employees. Topic 2024: "Democracy in the world of work - a path to fair work?" More Information (only in German)
