WU earns spots in the Social Sciences & Management und Engineering & Technology rankings with five subjects

In the current QS World University Rankings by Subject, WU Vienna University of Economics and Business has been ranked successfully with four different subjects in the Social Sciences & Management category and with one entry in Engineering & Technology. These rankings compare individual subjects in five broad subject areas and are based, among other things, on large university reputation surveys and data on research performance.

In the field of Business & Management Studies, WU is the best-ranked Austrian university, taking 57th place out of 626 institutions ranked, putting it in the top 10% worldwide. It is also the best Austrian university in the field of Economics & Econometrics, ranking 91st out of 560. Further ranking positions achieved: Accounting & Finance (101–150 group) and Law & Legal Studies (251–300 group). In addition, WU was also ranked in Computer Sciences & Information Systems (551–600 group) in the Engineering & Technology category.

International rankings boost visibility

For WU Rector Rupert Sausgruber, participating in international rankings serves as an important means of increasing a university’s international visibility: “Good ranking results play a key role in the race for good students and researchers. At the same time, they also provide guidance and orientation in a highly competitive environment. The results of the latest QS rankings show that WU has an excellent international reputation, both in academia and the business world. In particular, our position in  the Business & Management Studies category is proof that our research and teaching performance is highly competitive internationally.”

About the QS Rankings

The annual World University Rankings issued by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) are among the best-known higher education rankings worldwide, alongside the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking. In addition to the World University Rankings, QS also publishes the QS World University Rankings by Subject, which rank more than 15,000 degree programs taught at over 1,500 universities around the world in five general disciplines (Arts & Humanities; Engineering & Technology; Life Sciences & Medicine; Natural Sciences; Social Sciences & Management). The rankings are based on five indicators: Two types of surveys to determine universities’ reputation scores with a total of over 200,000 respondents worldwide – one survey conducted among academics and one among employers – the citation and impact scores of academic publications, and the international research network.

US universities again take the top spots in the rankings this year, with Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology topping the table. With Oxford and Cambridge, UK universities also hold strong positions in the top group. ETH Zurich is the highest-ranked university in continental Europe.
