Three new professors for law at WU
WU is pleased to welcome three new women to its senior faculty in March to strengthen the university’s research and teaching.
Susanne Auer-Mayer to join the Department of Private Law as professor of labor law and social security law with a focus on digitalization in the workplace
Susanne Auer-Mayer earned her doctorate at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg in 2010, and her venia docendi in 2018. After completing her habilitation, she taught at the University of Salzburg as an associate professor of labor and social security law. She has also been a co-opted member of the board of directors of the Austrian Society for Labor and Social Law (Österreichische Gesellschaft für Arbeitsrecht und Sozialrecht) since 2019. In her research, she focuses mainly on labor and social legislation intended to support people with disabilities, anti-discrimination law, vacation time and working time law, the distinction between self-employment and dependent self-employment (false self-employment), the obligations of the insured to cooperate with social insurance providers, and data protection in the workplace (especially with regard to the participation rights of employee representatives). “In my work at WU, I will be focusing on digitalization in the workplace. In addition to data protection issues, other areas will include assessing different types of employment with regard to new forms of work (e.g. platform work), the use of algorithms in personnel recruiting, liability issues, and the effects of digitalization on collective labor law,” says Susanne Auer-Mayer. She also plans to teach a specialist seminar in her field of expertise.
Katharina Pabel to join the Department of Public Law and Tax Law as professor of public law, business law, and international law
Katharina Pabel graduated with a doctorate from the University of Bonn, and went on to earn her venia docendi at WU in 2009. A native of Germany, Katharina Pabel has taught at universities including Bonn, Graz, and WU before being appointed as a full professor of public law at Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU). From 2011 to 2015, she was head of the Institute of Administrative Law and Administrative Education at JKU, and dean of the Faculty of Law from 2015 to 2019. She has also been a member of the Advisory Committee of the United Nations Human Rights Council, is chair of the Expert Council on Integration and an ad hoc judge at the ECHR. Her work focuses mainly on the protection of human rights on national, European, and international levels, fundamental legal rights, and procedural law. “Building on my previous research and my international contacts, in my work at WU I would like to further strengthen my research and teaching on various aspects of the protection of fundamental and human rights from national, European, and international perspectives, and look for connections to the development of the European-style rule of law,” says Katharina Pabel.
Julia Told to join the Department of Private Law as professor of civil law
Julia Told graduated with a doctoral degree in law from the University of Vienna in 2010. Afterwards, she gained professional experience in the private sector alongside her work as a research and teaching assistant at the University of Vienna before becoming a scholar at the renowned Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg. She spent time as a visiting fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2014, and in 2015 she was hired as a trainee lawyer by a renowned law firm. She returned to the University of Vienna in 2016, where her habilitation is currently under review. In March she will come to WU as a professor for civil law. In her research, Julia Told’s main focus is on private law, including corporate law issues such as liability claims, representation, and conflicts of interest. “At WU, I want to focus on banking contract law, credit security law, international private law harmonization projects, digitalization in private law, and the limits of private autonomy. I am also particularly looking forward to teaching, both in WU’s bachelor’s and master’s programs,” said Julia Told.
