SROI Analysis of the Social Impact of the HobbyLobby

HobbyLobby Logo

Inequality of opportunity among children and young people in Austria not only affects everyday school life, but also continues in the afternoons after the school bell rings. Socio-economically disadvantaged children fall behind children whose parents can finance further education in their free time. Recreational education continues to build skills after school, 70% of our knowledge is acquired in informal contexts. Meaningful leisure activities are thus a privilege in our society. Education is not yet thought of holistically in Austria.

Fun, joy and enthusiasm in one's own childhood are often connected with thoughts of the football or volleyball club, fun piano lessons or the second home in dance classes. Many children are denied these experiences, because every 5th child in Austria is at risk of poverty. Hobby Lobby offers leisure activities in the form of regular, free courses for children and young people who otherwise have no opportunity for further education in their free time due to various access barriers.

The NPO Competence Center is conducting an evaluation of the social added value of the Hobby Lobby's leisure education programme. More precisely, an SROI analysis calculates which monetised impacts the Hobby Lobby triggers among various stakeholders and those affected. These are compared to the monetary investments in the organisation to determine an SROI value.
