European Universities

European Universities are transnational alliances of higher education institutions from across the EU supported through the EU’s Erasmus+ and Horizon 2020 program.

These alliances are intended to

  • become the universities of the future,

  • promote European values and identity,

  • improve the quality and competitiveness of European higher education.

The European Universities have the ambitious goal to enhance the quality, inclusion, digitalization and attractiveness of European higher education for the benefit of students, teachers and society.

The first 17 alliances of higher education institutions were selected in 2019, and another group of additional 24 European Universities in 2020, among these also the ENGAGE.EUalliance.

The European University Engaged in Societal Change

ENGAGE.EU is an alliance of nine leading European universities in business, economics, and social sciences, which aims to empower a new generation of socially engaged European citizens by equipping them with the set of skills and competencies needed to tackle the grand societal challenges and positively impact society at large.

The starting points are the big challenges reflected in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in­cluding digitalization and artificial intelligence, climate change, ageing societies and migration. Building on solid background in social sciences, ENGAGE.EU strives for a comprehensive approach, following three intercon­nected paths:

  • Engaged Learning

  • Engaged Research and Innovation

  • Engaged in Society

ENGAGE.EU has as an aim to change the way we educate, investi­gate, innovate and reach out while becoming an incubator for driving societal change based on aca­demic excellence and work with society.

ENGAGE.EU Learning

The ENGAGE.EU university campus, with a common course catalogue, offers courses in business, economics and social sciences, as well as humanities, law, public health and STEAM. A range of physical and virtual mobility opportunities are also embedded in our program. These include summer schools, signature courses and joint study program.

Forscher*innen

ENGAGE.EU Research and Innovation

ENGAGE.EU R&I focuses on early-stage researchers with the ENGAGE.EU PhD program, drawing on the full range of skills, perspectives and regional and national contexts of our institutions. It also focuses on supporting our emerging research communities. The ENGAGE.EU Think Tank has been developed to serve as an invaluable platform for our researchers to facilitate meaningful engagement with external stakeholders on broad topics of interest, fostering collaboration and innovation in the research landscape.

ENGAGE.EU Outreach

Bridging research and innovation with society, ENGAGE.EU Labs bring together students, lifelong learners, researchers, innovators, companies, citizens’ initiatives and policy makers. These labs are open, dynamic innovation spaces for knowledge creation teams, embodying our challenge-based framework. ENGAGE.EU work-integrated learning program help practitioners become responsible change agents for their respective organisations, combining academic insights with the highest professional standards.
