Plug & Study rooms are former PC rooms in which the previously permanently installed PCs have been removed to make room for students' notebooks. Each workstation in a Plug & Study room is equipped with a large monitor, input devices (mouse and keyboard) and a bundle of cables. Students can connect their own device to the large monitor, which makes working with third-party applications (e.g. SPSS) much easier. A total of 250 virtual PC workstations (see "How can I access the virtual PC workstation?") are available for using the third-party applications. These contain the same software as the PCs in the remaining PC rooms.

The following Plug & Study rooms are available in the winter semester 2024/25:

• TC.-1.61 with 50 seats

• TC.3.02 with 40 seats

• LC.-1.021 with 23 seats

From the summer semester 2025, the following Plug & Study rooms will also be available:

• LC.-1.022 with 30 seats

• LC.-1.038 with 30 seats

• LC.2.064 with 30 seats 

The lecturers' PCs have been retained for the time being. As a teacher, you can use them as usual.

In the coming academic year 2024/25, the following classrooms are suitable for BYOD courses due to good power supply and Wi-Fi capacity:

If you require special software for your course on the virtual PCs in the Plug&Study rooms, please report this requirement to pcraum@wu.ac.at by the end of the semester (of the current semester), as the virtual PCs are usually prepared for the following semester during the holiday period. If you do not notify us of your requirements in good time, we cannot guarantee that the software can be installed on time.

Please make sure to provide students with the following information in advance of a BYOD class:

Bring a notebook with an up-to-date browser (Google Chrome/Microsoft Edge). Smartphones and tablets are not suitable.

Charge the battery of the devices and take the charging cable with you.

Take required input devices (e.g. mouse) with you.

Know the WU WLAN login data or reset the password in advance

In Plug & Study rooms, teachers do not need a virtual PC workstation because the lecturer's PCs are equipped with the appropriate software.

If you use your own device in your course and use a third-party application (e.g. SPSS), you can access it via a virtual PC workstation.

There are four virtual PC rooms that can be booked for courses. The number of available virtual PC workstations reflects the number of seats in the physical PC rooms/Plug & Study rooms

• XS = 25 seats (+1 for teachers)

• S = 30 seats (+1 for teachers)

• M = 40 seats (+1 for teachers)

• L = 50 seats (+1 for teachers)

These virtual PC rooms can be requested via Rooms when the course is announced. They are then booked by the teaching organization. Outside of the announcement phase (in the so-called "open phase") you can book the virtual PC rooms directly via Rooms.

Third-party applications can be used via virtual PC workstations. A total of 250 virtual PCs are available. They have the same range of software as the PCs in the remaining PC rooms.

The virtual PC workstations are accessed either directly via the Internet browser or a previously installed client.

Access via the internet browser:

1. Open the website: „https://labconnect.wu.ac.at“

2. Click on „VMware Horizon HTM Access“

3. Enter username and password. Username is the WU e-mail address; the password is the password for the WU account.

4. Select the virtual PC room booked for your course. The virtual PC room is booked together with the physical room in Rooms for the duration of the course. If no virtual PC room is assigned to the course, only the virtual PC lab (exercise room) is displayed.

Access via the Client

1. Open the website: „https://labconnect.wu.ac.at“

2. Download the VMware Horizon Client:

3. Install the VMware Horizon Client.

4. Start the VMware Horizon Client.

5. Click on „Server hinzufügen“ (add Server) and enter labconnect.wu.ac.at.

6. Select the appropriate virtual PC room. The virtual PC room is selected according to the booking in Rooms during the course duration. If no virtual PC room is assigned to the course, only the the virtual PC lab (exercise room) is displayed.

Access via Internet browser:

1. Expand the left side menu.

2. Click on the area "Open file transfer”.

3. 

            a. Upload file:

                     Drag the appropriate file with „Drag & Drop“ into the tab „Hochladen“ (Upload).

            b. Download file:

                     1. Select the tab „Herunterladen“ (Download).

                     2. Select the appropriate file (click left).

                     3. Click „Ctrl“ („Strg“) + „C“ to insert the file into the tab „Herunterladen“ (Download).

4. Click on the Download Symbol.

Access via Client:

1. Open the Windows-Explorer on the virtual PC.

2. 

        a. Upload file:

              1. Select a file from the storage drive „Network Drive (Z:)“.

              2. Copy or move the file to the storage drive „Windows (C:)“.

        b. Download file:

              1. Select a file from the storage drive „Windows (C:)“.

              2. Copy or move the file to the storage drive „Network Drive (Z:)“.

Access via Internet browser:

1. Close all open programs on the virtual PC workstation.

2. On the desktop of the virtual PC workstation, click on „LogOut“.

3. Close the local Internet browser.

Access via Client:

1. Close all open programs on the virtual PC workstation.

2. On the desktop of the virtual PC workstation, click on „LogOut“.

3. Close the local VMware Horizon Client.

If the connection to the virtual PC workstation is interrupted during the course, it can be re-established by logging in again. If the connection is re-established within 15 minutes of the connection being lost, all files are retained. If the connection is lost for longer than 15 minutes, the virtual PC workstation is reset, and all files are lost.

You can connect a USB stick to your PC and access it via the virtual PCs, provided you have installed the Horizon Client. Adding the USB stick does not work via web access.

Connect the USB stick to your PC.

If your operating system has recognized the USB stick, click on "Connect USB Device". Here, all available USB sticks will be displayed to you.

Select your USB stick.

Your USB stick is connected to the virtual PC, and you can access it on the virtual PC via the File Explorer, as usual.

If you plan to conduct an online session in the virtual PC room and would like to use Microsoft Teams or Zoom as a web conferencing tool, please proceed as follows:

1. Start the online meeting in Microsoft Teams or Zoom and set everything up for it (microphone, camera, screen sharing, etc.).

2. Now open the Horizon Client and access the virtual PC (see "How can I access the virtual PCs?").

3. If you want to stream a presentation, you must first share your entire screen in Microsoft Teams or Zoom. You can then open the presentation on the virtual PC.

You can minimize or reduce the application window of the virtual PC at any time to access your local PC and the virtual PC at the same time.
