Digital exams

WU is increasingly focussing on digital written examinations. These offer new opportunities for competency-based examinations and also contribute to environmental protection by eliminating paper.

Following its experience with remote exams since the Covid-19 pandemic, WU is now going one step further: In the 2023/24 academic year, several written BYOD exams of different sizes were conducted for the first time. In these exams, students complete the exam on their own devices (BYOD stands for ‘Bring Your Own Device’). The exam takes place under supervision in the classrooms on campus. Following the first examinations, lecturers were asked about their experiences. Their feedback will be incorporated into the gradual introduction of BYOD exams from the 2024/25 winter semester.

WU will therefore offer digital written exams in three formats:

  • On-campus exams in BYOD mode

  • Distance exams

  • Exams in PC rooms (discontinued model)

MyLEARN acts as an examination platform for all three formats with the Digital Exams application.

BYOD-Exams

Students work on the exams on their own devices on the WU campus.

Distance exams

Students work on the exam from anywhere and on their own computers.

Exams in PC rooms (discontinued model)

Students work on the exam directly on the computer in the WU PC rooms.
