QS World University Rankings: Global recognition for WU

20/03/2025

In the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject, WU Vienna University of Economics and Business once again confirms its strong position in the higher education landscape. With several subjects scoring good results in the Social Sciences & Management category and one subject represented in the Engineering and Technology category, the rankings testify to the diversity and excellence of WU’s activities in research and teaching. The QS rankings compare academic subjects in five broad areas, based on large-scale reputation surveys and research metrics.

WU achieved a particularly good result in the field of Business & Management Studies, where it is listed as the 59th-best university worldwide – coming in among the top 10%, WU is the highest-ranked Austrian university and the second-best university in the German-speaking region.

In the Marketing category, WU also achieved a respectable result. Here, WU is the only Austrian university ranked and the second-best school in the German-speaking area, coming in in the 51–100 group. Placing 108th in the Economics & Econometrics field, WU is once again the highest-ranked Austrian university in this category. Further ranking positions achieved:

  • Accounting & Finance: 101–150 group

  • Statistics & Operational Research: 201–250 group

  • Law & Legal Studies: 251–300 group

  • Sociology: 251–300 group

  • Politics: 301–400 group

WU is also represented in the Computer Sciences & Information Systems category (501–550 group), which confirms that WU is a recognized player in the field of Engineering and Technology, too.

International rankings boost visibility

For WU Rector Rupert Sausgruber, international rankings are an important means of strengthening a university’s international visibility. “Success in rankings is a key factor in the race for high-potential students and research talent. Rankings also provide valuable guidance and orientation in a highly competitive academic environment. The results of the latest QS rankings show that WU has an excellent international reputation, both in academia and in the professional world,” Sausgruber says.

About the QS Rankings

The annual World University Rankings issued by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) are among the best-known higher education rankings worldwide, alongside the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking. The QS World University Rankings by Subject rank more than 15,000 degree programs taught at over 1,500 universities around the world in five general disciplines. The rankings are based on five indicators: global reputation surveys covering a total of over 200,000 academics and employers worldwide, the citation and impact scores of academic publications, and the international research network.

In the overall Social Sciences & Management discipline ranking, WU comes in at 119th place worldwide this year. The top ranks go to big-name elite universities: Harvard is number one, followed by Oxford and Stanford. Coming in 12th, Italy’s Bocconi University is the highest-ranked university in continental Europe.
