Stefan Giljum - WU Researcher of the Month

04/09/2017

Text of the WU's Vice-Rector for Research, Stefan Pichler, to September's Researcher of the Month:

"Our September Researcher of the Month received an important distinction last year: Stefan Giljum, head of the Sustainable Resource Use research group at the Institute for Ecological Economics, was granted a prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant from the European Research Commission in late 2016.

The two million euro grant is paid out over a period of five years, and the Viennese-born researcher will be using the funds to finance his research project FINEPRINT, in which he and his team he are investigating the amount of natural resources required for the production and consumption of goods and services and the effects of globalization on our use of raw materials.

Stefen Giljum’s research profile demonstrates clearly just how qualified he is to do this: He earned his doctorate from the University of Vienna in 2004 with a thesis on resource and land use in north-south trade, and received his venia docendi in the field of ecological economics from WU in May, 2017. He has been a visiting researcher as far afield as the University of Chile and Keele University in Great Britain. His current research focuses mainly on the analysis of resource use through production and consumption, the environmental and social impacts of globalization, and sustainability assessment.

In his <link en research wu-researchers researcher-of-the-month-stefan-giljum>research video, Stefan Giljum gives us a few fascinating insights into his ERC project and reveals his initial findings – we hope you find it as interesting as we do!"
