Decoration of Honor for WU Professor Katharina Pabel

Katharina Pabel receives a Grand Decoration of Honor in Silver for Services to the Republic of Austria in the field of social integration

On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, Austrian Social Integration Affairs Minister Susanne Raab presented the Republic of Austria’s Decoration of Honor for services in the field of social integration to six distinguished recipients during a ceremony at the Federal Chancellery. WU Professor Katharina Pabel, deputy head of the WU Institute for European and International Law, was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor in Silver for Services to the Republic of Austria. “I’m delighted about this opportunity to honor six outstanding people for their many years of highly committed work in the field of social integration and for their services to the Republic of Austria. Through their tireless efforts, the people honored have made great, significant contributions to our society,” said Federal Minister Susanne Raab.

Grand Decoration of Honor in Silver

With her profound professional expertise in constitutional law, Katharina Pabel has made invaluable contributions to tackling numerous complex legal issues, first as a member of the independent expert council on social integration affairs at the Federal Chancellery and then, from 2018, as its chairwoman. Katharina Pabel has received the Grand Decoration of Honor in Silver in recognition of these achievements.

Katharina Pabel obtained her doctoral degree from the University of Bonn in 2001 and earned her venia docendi at WU Vienna University of Economics and Business in 2009. Following stints at the universities of Bonn and Graz and at WU Vienna, among others, she took up a professorship in public law at the JKU Linz in 2010. At the JKU, she served as head of the Institute of Administrative Law and Administrative Education from 2011 to 2015 and as dean of the Faculty of Law from 2015 to 2019. She was also a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council Advisory Committee and an ad hoc judge at the European Court of Human Rights. In her work, she focuses on issues related to national, European, and international human rights protection, fundamental judicial rights, and procedural law. Katharina Pabel has been a full professor at WU since March 2020.
