Prof. Servatius Van Thiel

Prof. Servaas van Thiel lectures at the Wirstschafts Universitaet (since 2016) and at the: ‘Jean Monnet Summer School on European Union Policy Making’ (VUB/Diplomatische Akademie), and is a Part Time Judge in the Regional Court of Appeal in Den Bosch (Netherlands). He is Emeritus Professor at the Free University Brussels, where he was Director of the LL.M Program (2003-2011) and Professor on: ‘International law and sustainable development’ (2003-2022) and on: ‘International and European Taxation` (1988 – 2017). He worked for the European Union (1988-2021), including as Head of the Tax Division of the Council of Ministers (2003-2010) and as a diplomatic representative in the EU Delegations in Geneva and Vienna (1996-2019). He consulted for the Italian Council for Economy and Labour, the UN Centre for Transnational Corporations and the UN Economic Commission for Africa.

Prof van Thiel holds a Ph.D from Erasmus University Rotterdam (2001), anMA in Economics (1982 Cum Laude) and an LL.M. in International and Comparative Law (1981 Magna Cum Laude) from the Free University Brussels, and a Law degree from Radboud University Nijmegen (1981). He co-authored/edited more than 120 books and articles and guest-lectured world-wide on international and European law and tax law, including at: Donau University Krems (2018-2022), Erasmus University Rotterdam (1993-2013), New York University Law School (2006-2010), University of Georgia Law School (1991-2010), Turku University and Abe Academy (1992 to 2000), Harvard International Tax Program (1995 and 1997), and the  South Central Institute for Politics and Law Wuhan, PRC (1991).
