Prof. Ewald Nowotny Mobility Grant at WU

02/10/2019

During the inaugural ceremony for the new Rector’s Council yesterday evening, the new Governor of the OeNB Oesterreichische Nationalbank Robert Holzmann and former Governor Ewald Nowotny ceremonially presented WU Rector Edeltraud Hanappi-Egger with the “Prof. Ewald Nowotny Mobility Grant,” funded by the OeNB. The new grant will provide financial support for students taking part in international scientific events, allowing the students to start building up their networks within the scientific community.

The mobility grant has been established as a parting gift from the OeNB to former Governor Ewald Nowotny for his many years of service. Nowotny has always had very close ties to WU, and, as a former vice-rector and member of the University Board, has also played a part in shaping the university’s course for many years.

Supporting young people

Professor emeritus Nowotny expressed an explicit desire to help students. “I would like to thank the OeNB for making this grant possible. I think this is a good contribution to give young people the opportunity to gain international experience. It will also facilitate European integration and strengthen international understanding,” says Ewald Nowotny. WU Rector Hanappi-Egger is also very grateful, and says, “Participation in international scientific events is especially relevant for students taking their first steps in the academic world. It gives them the chance to present their work to a wider, international audience or to build up or expand their international networks. The grant will encourage more students to take this step, and support those who have until now been unable to participate in such events for financial reasons.”

Grant open to all students within the minimum program duration

The grant offers financial support for active participation – such as giving talks or presentations or taking part in discussions – in international scientific events, conferences, symposia, moot courts, or congresses focusing on current developments in social and economic policy. Bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD-level students who are still within the prescribed minimum duration for their program are eligible to apply. Selection of grant recipients is based on the innovative potential demonstrated by the student and other factors, and is made by a selection committee. The grant provides funding for travel costs, participation fees, and other expenses.
