SBWL "Strategy & Organization" FAQ
Administrative
Where can I find the course schedule?
The official schedule for the lectures of the current term can be found in the WU Course Catalog (eVVZ).
Are there any fees I have to pay for the SBWL?
You will not have to pay any fees for the specialization itself.
The Cases course will be based on case studies from Harvard Business School Publishing, which you have to purchase from their website (approx. € 30,-). Instructions on how to purchase these case studies will be given in the course.
Application
What do I have to do in order to apply for the SBWL?
All information regarding SBWL application can be found here.
What counts as "Proof of English skills"?
We accept one or more of the following documents as Proof of English skills:
Successful completion of "English Business Communication 1"
Standardised test certificates such as TOEFL, Cambridge etc.
High school/secondary school leaving certificate from an English language school
If you cannot provide us with any of the documents above, please lay out in your application how you have obtained the necessary English skills to participate in our SBWL.
When can I apply for the SBWL?
Application for our SBWL opens every semester.
Registration for the AG “Access to Specialization: Strategy and Organization” and the application via our website take place at the same time.
You can find all current registration deadlines on the WU homepage.
Can I send my application documents before or after the enrollment period?
No. We want to ensure a fair selection process, which is why we only accept applications for the SBWL during the published application period.
Admission
How will I find out whether I have been accepted into the SBWL?
We will inform the successful applicants by e-mail and set a deadline by which they need to confirm the place offered to them.
After confirmation, you will receive the label “successfully completed” in “Access to Specialization: Strategy and Organization” on LPIS. From then on you can register for the individual SBWL courses via LPIS.
When will I find out whether I have been accepted into the SBWL?
Please note that the evaluation of applications can take several days. We will inform accepted students as quickly as possible.
Please refrain from inquiring about the status of your application, as we cannot answer this kind of message due to time constraints.
My AG course has been graded “successfully completed”. What do I have to do next?
After your AG has been assessed as “successfully completed”, you can register for the individual SBWL courses via the LPIS system as long as registration is open. Further information can be found in the eVVZ.
I have been accepted to the SBWL, but I would like to start the specialization in the next semester. Is this possible?
Unfortunately that is not possible. Your application is only valid for the semester you applied for. You must begin your specialization by attending Course 1 immediately; otherwise, you will lose your admission and will no longer be able to register for courses in the SBWL.
I have been accepted to the SBWL, but I have decided against accepting my spot. What do I do now?
Please notify us as soon as possible if you do not wish to accept your place in the SBWL, so we can offer the available place to one of the applicants on our waiting list.
If you do not reject the admission in writing, or reject it after the deadline set by us has passed, you will be blocked for future SBWL application cycles.
Structure of the SBWL
Is it possible to attend the courses in a different order?
No. The courses build upon each other; you will need the knowledge from the previous course for the next one. Therefore, you must attend the courses in the designated order.
Why is it not possible for me to enroll in all 5 courses in one semester?
Our course design builds knowledge across individual courses.
You must first take courses 1 to 3 to learn the basics of Strategy & Organization. Courses 4 and 5 then build on this prior knowledge. Therefore, completing courses 1, 2 and 3 is mandatory in order to take part in the courses of the second semester.
Studying abroad and Accreditation
I will study abroad for a semester and am therefore unable to attend all SBWL courses in two consecutive semesters. Will I still have a spot in courses 4 and 5 after my return?
It is possible to attend the remaining courses after your return, however we cannot guarantee you that a spot will be available.
Every semester new students will be starting the SBWL and the registration for lectures via LPIS operates on a “first come, first served” principle. Please ensure that you register via LPIS as soon as the registration period begins.
During the first semester we determine how many of our SBWL students plan to study abroad in the following semester. Please be sure to take part in the survey and let us know if and when you will be going abroad as early as possible.
For which SBWL courses can I transfer credits?
We have specifically designed our SBWL courses to build upon each other, particularly courses 1, 2, 4 and 5. Therefore, we cannot accept external courses to replace these courses.
However, it is possible to replace course 3 with equivalent courses abroad. Before your stay abroad, please make sure that the WU Study Service Center (Study Regulations & Credit Transfer) accredits the courses that you have chosen.
Will the courses I have attended abroad be accredited?
Accreditation is done by the regulations office. If you need further information on accreditation, please contact them directly via E-Mail to course.abroad@wu.ac.at or at their office in the LC building.
