Institute for Organization Design
Established in 2017, we are an international team of researchers who have been trained and worked in the United States, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany, and Austria.
Our international and interdisciplinary backgrounds, commitment to excellence, energy, passion for strategic and organizational questions, as well as our team spirit significantly benefit our research, teaching, collaboration with industry partners, and consulting.
With our research, we apply a unique and comprehensive approach to study companies’ strategic organization design. We develop insights into organization designs that enable firms to remain adaptive and balance short-term and long-term goals, including novel forms of organizing. We also study top management team and corporate board designs and processes that facilitate effective strategic decision making and governance. In more recent work, we apply behavioral perspectives to investigate how executive cognition and personality relates to their strategic decision-making and organization design choices. We thereby apply machine learning approaches to analyze large-scale data.
We cooperate with colleagues from renowned institutions in Europe, the United States, and Asia. Our objective is to significantly advance the academic debate in our field and to derive meaningful implications for managers through our research results, which we publish in leading international journals and present at international conferences.
With our teaching, we deliver state-of-the-art, academically sound and managerially relevant education in Strategic Management and Organization Design. Students learn to analyze strategic and organizational challenges, to critically reflect on existing approaches, and to develop integrative solutions. Our lectures and seminars are highly interactive, integrate the latest research findings, and discuss current problems that international firms face.
We actively collaborate with industry partners in a range of activities. Managers discuss examples from their companies in guest lectures, workshops, and project seminars. We apply our academic insights in executive education courses and customized training sessions. We also work closely with companies on strategic and organizational topics by, for instance, conducting academically sound analyses for them, as well as offering workshops and consulting services to them. We create additional practice impact through keynote speeches and publications in practitioner outlets.
