Surveillance Capitalism

At the Institute for IS & Society we are on top of how the digital economy is increasingly penetrated by a form of Surveillance Capitalism. Together with Vienna activist Wolfie Chirstl Prof Spiekermann published the book: “Networks of Control” in 2016 that contains over 600 case studies on how companies collect personal data and use this data for all kinds of services from simple advertisement to election manipulation.

In her online tutorial on Surveillance Capitalism Sarah Spiekermann explains how this whole system of data collection, aggregation, use and abuse works and why it is problematic.
