Abstract:

With more than 26 tonnes per capita, Austria has a comparatively high level of resource consumption. While the domestic extraction of raw materials remained constant in the past 15 years, direct material consumption increased, indicating that growing amounts of raw materials need to be imported from abroad, in order to satisfy domestic demand. This entails high import ratios and a potential vulnerability of Austrian industries for supply restrictions. Empirical studies regarding the resource use of Austrian industries are scarce, thus limiting the factual basis to discuss issues of resource efficiency in the context of Austrian economic policies. In our talk, we present results from a recently constructed model to assess the resource use of the Austrian economy and selected economic sectors. The model is a multi-regional input-output model that uses additional national data from Statistics Austria, thus ensuring that the Austrian data are consistent with the national accounts. We present selected results for the macro-economic as well as the sector level, addressing questions such as: Has the Austrian economy achieved a decoupling between resource use and economic growth? In which world regions are the different raw materials extracted that serve as direct or indirect imports of the Austrian economy? What is the material profile of different economic sectors? And to what extent do time trends on sectoral material use correlate with trends in value added and employment?
