Christoph Feichter (IfU) & Eddy Cardinaels (Tilburg University) published a paper in the Journal of Accounting Research (WU-Star-list-journal) entitled "Forced Rating Systems from Employee and Supervisor Perspectives"

They show that forced ratings are less likely to increase performance in tasks that require subjective judgments (eg. creative work), but they do have harmful side effects for employees and supervisors.
