3th WU Symposium on International Business Communication
DISCOURSE AND ORGANIZATIONS: MULTIDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVES
March 24-26, 2010
WU Vienna, Building UZA 1, 2nd floor, Main Conference Room
Text and talk are instrumental in building and sustaining organizations, both in structural terms and through day-to-day management. In spite of the "linguistic turn" of organizational studies, and widespread acceptance of its constructivist underpinnings, there is still remarkably little dialogue, and even less proactive cooperation, between linguists and those approaching organization from different perspectives. There may be no hostility, but peaceful co-existence is, in itself, generally not sufficient to create fruitful synergies.
The aim of this symposium is to provide a forum for such dialogue and debate by bringing together scholars from different disciplines who share an interest in the discourse in and about organization(s). Invited contributors will be free to choose their own topic, as long as their papers fit broadly within the symposium title and provide sufficient openings for cross-disciplinary exchange. We are also planning to organize the symposium along the lines of a speaker-and-discussant format, and would hope that most speakers are also prepared to fill the role of discussant for one of their colleagues' papers.
As far as paper presentations are concerned, the symposium is by invitation only, but attendance will be open to all WU faculty and, space permitting, to participants from other universities.
