Free Electives in BBE
The curriculum is designed to be flexible and allows you to integrate a wide range of free electives. You have to complete 26 ECTS credits worth of free electives.
What course types may be recognized as free electives?
Free electives may be selected from all courses that require an examination as offered by all recognized public and private universities in Austria or abroad.
Courses can be in any language, the language of instruction does not need to be English.
If you are planning to go on an exchange semester, we strongly recommend that you complete your free electives at one of our partner universities.
What courses (types) cannot be recognized as free electives?
Pass/Fail courses, such as AGs (Arbeitsgemeinschaften), will not be recognized as free electives.

Please note to "change term" on the upper left und eVVZ to see the current semester. Please note that pass/fail courses (course type AG) cannot be recognized as free electives.

How do course recognition and credit transfer work?
For credit transfer of courses taken as free electives as a degree student at WU (e.g. a BAWISO course as a BAWISO student), at another university, abroad at one of our partner universities, courses taken at the Business Language Center, engagement for Volunteering/Mentoring@WU, or ÖH engagement, please find detailed information here.
You can apply for the credit transfer of exams completed before your admission at WU when you wish.
The team of Study Regulations & Credit Transfer (advice on recognition issues, notification pickup, individual studies, merit and need-based scholarship grants) is available to you personally in the Study Service Center. More details available here.
Not all courses completed during your BBE studies will be automatically recognized as free electives. We recommend to carefully consider which courses you want to recognize as free electives. Recognition is possible until your final semester. You may complete your free electives first, go on exchange etc. before you ask for recognition.
For recognition of all successfully completed courses as free electives at WU (for ex. courses from an additional specialization) or as concurrent enrolment at another university in Austria (Mitbelegung - please see below), please send an e-mail to bbe@wu.ac.at, but only after you gained a minimum of 140 ECTS credits and your grade has been issued/entered in LPIS. If the course is prerequisite for any other courses, exceptions can be made and courses can be recognized as free electives with less than 140 ECTS credits.
For the courses listed in the additional courses lists (BBE, BAWISO, BAWIRE): they are automatically assigned as free electives once the grades are entered online. The number of ECTS received is indicated in the electronic course catalogue.
Concurrent enrollment / Co-registration at another university
Concurrent enrollment makes it possible for students who are currently admitted to and registered for a regular degree program at WU to attend individual courses at another Austrian university (not at a private university).
In order to attend individual courses at another Austrian university (not at a private university), you first have to submit an application for concurrent enrollment. You will find here information regarding some of the main Viennese universities:
Please directly contact the university where you would like to study in order to receive precise instructions regarding co-registration. It may differ from one university to another. Some universities require that you send them a confirmation from WU approving your application for a co-registration. Please contact in this case anerkennung@wu.ac.at.
Once you are concurrently enrolled at another university, you are allowed to attend classes and to take exams. If you pass exams and wish to get them recognized at WU as free electives, please send your transcript of records to bbe@wu.ac.at (valid transcripts of records have to contain an electronic signature or a signature + a stamp).
