MASTER

Field of competence "Family Business" in the Master's degree program in Management

Family businesses are the most common type of business worldwide. Depending on the definition, they make up between 50% and 95% of the business population. This means that management graduates are very likely to take on a management position in a family business sooner or later. Be it as an employed non-family manager or as a new owner or successor as part of a succession plan, shareholder or advisory board member in a family business. Family businesses are characterized by the interaction of the family and business systems (often over generations). This results in characteristics of family businesses that are reflected in specific “rules of the game” and bring with them special opportunities as well as challenges. Understanding these “rules of the game” in the specific business constellation is a key to the successful management of family businesses. Against this background, the competence area aims to provide a fundamental understanding of the characteristics of management in family businesses and illustrates this using typical areas of application from business practice.
