Organisers

Coming from different subject areas, the organisers share a common research interest – they are fascinated by the many aspects of the interactions between EU law and international law, with the concept of ‘autonomy of EU law’ being a key driving force in the mix. After having worked on the subject in their own fields, they now wish to join forces and invite others to do the same and explore this multidimensional topic in greater depth.

Birgit Hollaus is a researcher at the Institute for Law and Governance at WU Vienna. Her research focuses on the interactions between international and EU environmental law, the increasing internationalisation of EU environmental law and its consequences – structural, institutional and substantive. This research interest has led to publications such as her monograph Multilateral Compliance Mechanisms in EU Environmental Law : Internationalising EU Environmental Action and Beyond (Edward Elgar 2023).

Stefan Mayr is a Reader in International and EU law at WU Vienna. He recently completed a multi-year research project on the uneasy relationship between EU law and international law in the field of investor-state arbitration, the results of which will be published soon. His past publications, such as the co-authored paper Palm oil, the RED II and WTO law: EU sustainable biofuel policy tangled up in green? or the book chapter CETA, TTIP, TiSA, and their Relationship with EU Law reflect his strong interest in exploring the interactions between international economic law and EU law.

Tamás Molnár is a scholar in international law and a guest researcher at the Institute for Law and Governance, WU Vienna. He specialises in international/EU human rights law and international/EU migration and refugee law, and examines the interaction of these subsystems of international law with EU law, as shown, amongst others, in his monograph The Interplay between the EU''s Return Acquis and International Law (Edward Elgar 2021). In his current research, he focuses on the multifaceted interactions between EU law and international law, employing juxtaposed perspectives. His co-authored book, Interactions Between EU Law and International Law: Juxtaposed Perspectives, was recently published with Edward Elgar.
