Information and rules
In principle, students can write their bachelor thesis in Economic and Social History if they have fulfilled the requirements defined in the study plan and have successfully completed at least one course with the staff of the institute. Because economic and social historical research has its particularities, we advise students to enroll in courses on „Grundlagen wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens“ (commonly translated as Principles of academic work) taught by the staff of our institute. (On bachelor’s theses in Philosophy see here)
The section on „Thesis – Topics“ provides information about the preferred topics/areas of the permanent staff of the institute holding a PhD.
If you are interested in writing your bachelor thesis at the institute, please start with handing a proposal to the selected potential supervisor during his/her office hours. This proposal should contain between 500 and 1000 words and cover the following items:
(1) Working title,
(2) Topic and research question (and preliminary hypothesis regarding how to answer it),
(3) Methods and relevant literature/sources to tackle the question,
(4) Preliminary table of contents,
(5) circa five relevant references as an introduction,
(6) a realistic time schedule.
In the Bachelor in Business and Economics (BBE) program such a proposal is - according to the general guidelines - part of the"Application Process" and would provide - in case of a successful match - the basis for the "Bachelor's Thesis Agreement" with your potential supervisor. At our institute, the Application Process consists in approaching the potential supervisor directly with a first version of your proposal. In the German language Bachelor in Economics and Social Sciences (Bawiso) program this process is not formally regulated but is handled similarly by our staff. Writing bachelor's theses in English is also possible in Bawiso. Students should be aware that the whole matching/application process is subject to constraints, not least the capacity of potential supervisors, and therefore we can offer no guarantees that a supervision will actually materialize in each case. Students should also be prepared to answer questions by the potential supervisor regarding the criteria mentioned in the first paragraph above.
Basically, a bachelor thesis according to the study plan has to embody the work of c. 200 hours corresponding to 8 ECTS (Bawiso) or 250 hours corresponding to 10 ECTS (BBE), which should translate into 30 to 40 pages A4 (or 10,000 to 15,000 words plus references and possible figures and tables). As a guideline, you should have used at least 20-25 relevant academic works for your bachelor thesis – these should be visible in your references and bibliography. For individual theses, details and concrete specifications are to be agreed with your supervisor and subject to his/her judgement, taking into account the topic, approach and study plan (Bawiso/BBE) in question.
