"Over the past few years, and especially after my grandmother died at the beginning of this year, I have often thought about the time in Austria my grandparents grew up in. On the one hand about the suffering and the difficult times that they had to go through during the Second World War, when they were still teenagers and young adults, but also about the people who had to suffer even more during those difficult times. Unfortunately, I was never able to get to know the majority of my male ancestors because they either died in the war or as a result of the war, but my last deceased grandmother tried to tell me as much as possible about them when I was little. She often stressed that it was a very difficult time, especially for my grandfather, who was just 19 years old at the time of the "Anschluss", so he was more or less still a child, when he was forced to join the “Wehrmacht” and go to war. He was imprisoned in Russia for years but was lucky enough to survive. My grandma often emphasized that her Jewish friends with whom she went to school with were not so lucky as my grandfather and that was when I started to gain interest in the history of the Jewish population of Austria."
"This course has been a great impactful insight into a topic I was not at all familiar with. Anti-Semitism is not something I learned about in the English school system and so it was refreshing to research this topic."
"I was looking forward to this course, because I wanted to learn more about what antisemitism is and how it has changed since the times of national socialism. Already in the first session I have learnt that in Hungary (my homeland) there are plenty of anti-Semites, which was a bit schocking to hear, since I never met a single person who has issues with Jews. This triggered me to look deeper into the matter, so I researched some papers and articles about antisemitism in Hungary."
"My first realization of Holocaust was when one of my Jewish friends gave me the book ‘Anne Frank: Diary of a young girl’ as a graduation gift. I remember being hit by the book trying to accept that evil exists in the world on one hand and being ashamed by the fact that I actually never ever talked with my friends about the topic as I would have ignored it. Years passed and our friendship continued yet until last week I had never talked to any of my close friends about their feelings or even the fact that they are Jewish. I just did not know how to do, so have chosen to avoid it all together. Being interested in history and specifically in WW2 I was very happy to join the Anti-Semitism in Workplace course. The course has clearly shifted my mind-set and built further sensitivity muscles, listening to various professionals with different backgrounds. The game-changer for me was my research assignment about contemporary antisemitism in Turkey. I must admit, it has proven how ignorant I was when I reflect on it now, because I thought at the beginning ‘There isn’t any anti-Semitism in Turkey’. As I could not find too many written sources, I decided to call my friends and talk to them for the first time about being a Jew in Turkey. I had 8 different interview calls with 5 of my friends and one father of a friend. I have been working in the HR field for the last 17 years and am known as an extrovert personality with high communicative skills. Yet I can say that these calls were one of the most difficult calls I have ever conducted. The nature of these interviews was not hard, tough it was challenging from a personal level to ask the questions trying not to say something wrong or offend the other party. The more we have spoken the more I realized how ignorant I was towards the feelings of my close friends. Another mind-set I have realized is that I knew the WW2 history very well but I was also caught in ‘one man evil’ problem of Germany as if antisemitism was a one-time historical event that happened 60+ years ago and was over. I did not feel any responsibility nor accountability for holocaust or antisemitic events as it was those manipulative Germans who believed in Hitler to blame. Luckily, I was able to shift my mind-set away from those wrong assumptions after the course and simple interviews with my friends. I have realized that it is easy to think of myself as a non-racist or non-discriminative person when belonging to a majority in a society but I have to question my intentions and even thoughts constantly to be really fair and open."
"The issue of „the other” is particularly important now in times of globalization, because of the “foreigner position” that third culture generations are talking nowadays. Having a “potential wanderer” status myself, not having belonged in Austria from the beginning, but not belonging in my home country Romania either, I could easily relate to some of the assumptions made in the first text we had read, “The Stranger”. However, I had not imagined what antisemitism really meant before taking this course. It makes me feel like I had been ignorant beforehand. On the other hand, it teaches me not to be ignorant anymore in the future."
"Growing up on the edge of the Bible Belt of the US, I have heard more than my fair share of Jewish jokes and casual anti-Semitic remarks, but I never grasped how this was actually a part of a bigger culture that has been at play for hundreds, if not thousands of years."
"I can’t help but feel overwhelmed while reflecting on all of the knowledge I’ve gathered this semester. I didn’t really know what to expect when I first signed up for the course, but I knew I was interested in the content because, as I’m a Jew, I want to gain an insight on what antisemitism is like not only in Austria, but in other parts around the world as well. I’m proud to be a Jew and I feel very accomplished after having taken this course."

"I believe classes of these kind are important now more than ever for students in Austria. There is a long history of hiding or diluting the truth about the atrocities of the Second World War. While many have or are coming to terms with the truth of the history, there is still a lot of work to be done to slow and undo the rising antisemitism of the last few years and to reach a true understanding of how it should be ‘never again’."
"“Antisemitism at Work in Austria” deviates from the norm in so far as less focus is put on studying thick books and more on student participation, group projects and the integration of external experts. It was the first time I worked with foreign exchange students in a team."
"Grundsätzlich habe ich das Thema für den Kurs sehr spannend gefunden, obwohl ich es sehr außergewöhnlich gefunden habe einen Kurs mit diesem Titel auf der Wirtschaftsuniversität zu finden. Der Kurs „Antisemitism in Austria at Work“ war für mich persönlich eine ganz neue Erfahrung, nicht nur weil ich mich noch nie so intensiv mit diesem Thema beschäftigt habe sondern auch aufgrund des Lehrdesigns der Vorlesung. Ehrlich gesagt war mir überhaupt nicht bewusst, dass diese Thematik noch immer so präsent ist in unsere heutigen, „modernen“ und „aufgeklärten“ Welt."
"Der Nationalsozialismus und Antisemitismus prägten das 20. Jahrhundert der österreichischen Geschichte. Wie tief verwurzelt der Judenhass aber in der Gesellschaft war, war mir nicht bewusst. Diese Lehrveranstaltung ermöglichte es mir, einen tieferen Einblick in die Geschichte des Antisemitismus sowie die aktuellen Erscheinungsformen zu bekommen. Diese Lehrveranstaltung und die zahlreichen Gastvorträge haben nicht nur wertvolles Wissen vermittelt, sondern auch mein Bewusstsein zum Erkennen von Antisemitismus vertieft. Sie haben mir gezeigt, dass Antisemitismus nicht nur ein historisches Problem darstellt, sondern auch in der heutigen Zeit, insbesondere nach dem 7. Oktober 2023 so weit verbreitet ist wie schon lange nicht mehr."
"I came into this course with the expectation of learning more about the topic of antisemitism itself, the history of its origin, its various forms and manifestations and its relation to the current Palestine-Israel conflict. In retrospect, I am glad to say that my expectations around learning about the overall topic of antisemitism and its forms were highly satisfied in this course. The in-class speaker sessions were a great resource to gain knowledge from experts who have devoted a significant portion of their lives doing research around the phenomena of antisemitism.
Apart from the academic aspects, coming from a truly personal point of view, I come from a Muslim background, and growing up I was surrounded by a mixed set of feelings towards the Jewish people within the community and elders around me. Some claimed them to be our brothers in faith due to Islam and Judaism belonging to the same chain of the Abrahamic religions. Whilst other claimed Jews to be our sore enemies due to religious conflicts. The point I intend to make by sharing this information is that I grew with a biased opinion towards the Jewish people, but as I got older and started to question things using my own rationality, I had realized how problematic and dangerous such notions can be. It was in fact a perfect opportunity for me to gain insight into the struggles and prejudices the Jewish people have faced over time ranging from racism, classism, being slandered for blood libels and being persecuted and murdered for almost any other catastrophe that may have fallen in a region where Jewish people had resided. In addition, as I was doing research for my group project and looking at specific incidents of prejudices and antisemitism against Jewish people and students, I also found myself emphasizing with the Jewish people. This is because coming from a Muslim background as mentioned above, I have experienced Islamophobia across various stages of my life, and I know how it feels for your whole community/nation to be blamed and persecuted for the actions of a few. Therefore, this personal connection really helped me connect with the topic of this course on an emotional level."
"For me, the lectures were very informative, but the personal growth and learning came from conducting research for the group project on the Jewish Student experience in the United States right now. One of the things I am most grateful for is how this project played a significant role in helping me overcome rejection and face my social anxiety. As the group member responsible for reaching out via email and calling Jewish organizations, I had to confront my discomfort with making phone calls and the possibility of facing rejection. Initially, the thought of calling these organizations made me incredibly nervous, but the necessity of the task pushed me out of my comfort zone. Through this experience, I not only felt a sense of leadership within my group but also built stronger connections with my group members. We all bonded over the shared struggle of obtaining responses, and this failure, for lack of a better word, surprisingly made me feel more integrated into the dynamic of the group. The experience of engaging with Jewish students going through this time of tension has underscored the importance of empathy, understanding, and open dialogue in addressing such sensitive issues. I have learned that while quantitative data is valuable, qualitative insights are equally crucial in capturing the lived experiences of individuals. This is where our research shined and where we truly began to gain a new understanding on the topic."
"I think the best thing that I learned from this course was something that was a bit obvious, but something that I had not thought about before, which at the time made me feel a bit embarrassed that I had not thought about it before and that was the idea that the problem with antisemitism is not in the Jews, but it’s in the antisemites. This idea can also be applied to other cases of discrimination and prejudice, too, like in the cases of racism and homophobia, which is why I think it’s the best. People do not choose to be born as a certain ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, etc., so it stands to reason that they should not be discriminated against based on all of these, which is a belief that I hold dearly. It was also interesting to learn about philosemitism, which I did not think existed, since antisemitism appears to be so much more prevalent in our Western societies and it was also interesting to learn how it can turn into antisemitism really quickly, which is why people should not be stereotyped."
"Die Vorfälle antisemitischer Straftaten steigen seit dem Jahr 2013 kontinuierlich an, während der inflationäre Gebrauch von Sprache, oder nicht reichlich definierte Normen zum Gebrauch von Sprache bezüglich dieser, verwässert. Hinzu kommt die Masseneinwanderung von Flüchtlingen und Migranten aus patriarchalischen Strukturen und Gesellschaften, wo insbesondere der tiefsitzende religiöse Hass auf Jüdinnen und Juden nahezu zum Curriculum gehören. Außerdem erleben wir einen zunehmenden Rechtsruck in der EU. Die politische Lage scheint Antisemitismus wieder salonfähiger zu machen. Angefeuert wird dies durch die nicht erbrachte Integrationsleistung der eingewanderten Menschen seit 2015, die ihre Moral- und Ethikvorstellungen mit in die Schulen und letzendlich auch in die Gesellschaft tragen. Der Gazakonflikt heizt die Stereotypen an und verfestigt sich in der neuen Generation. Es bedarf ja nur einen kurzen Einblick in die Schulbücher von den Krisenherden der Welt. Hinzu kommt das nicht komplett aufgearbeitete schwere Erbe der Nationalsozialisten mit dem daraus resultierenden Schuldkult. Eine stolze nationale Identität ist hierzulande nicht so sehr ausgeprägt, wie z.B. in Ländern des Nahen Ostens. In dieses Vacuum des Patriotismus steigen dann letzendlich identitätsstiftend Organisation wie z.B. Muslim Interactiv, die neulich ein Khalifat in Hamburg gefordert haben. Meine These ist, dass diese Auswüchse des Hasses gegenüber Jüdinnen und Juden lediglich die sichtbare kleinste Ebene darstellt.
Zuletzt hat mich dieser Kurs auch persönlich über meine Familiengeschichte nachdenken lassen. Meine Familie mütterlicherseits sind Karpartendeutsche, sogenannte "Hauerländer" aus der Slowakei. Wir können nachempfinden, was es heißt Opfer von Vertreibung aufgrund von Volkszugehörigkeit oder Religion oder Kultur zu sein. Zunächst waren die Hauerländer Opfer von Hitlers "Befreiung unseres Deutschen Volkes" Feldzuges und anschließend waren sie wieder Opfer der Benes-Dekrete und des Partisanenaufstands als Rachefeldzug gegenüber den kollaborierenden Deutschen im Osten. Enteignungen waren damals noch das geringste Übel, was den Karpaten- oder den Sudentendeutschen passieren konnte. Mich besorgt daher diese Entwicklung zutiefst und erschreckend finde ich, dass selbst an Universitäten in der westlichen Welt gegen Israel derart demonstriert wird. Ich verspüre aber gleichzeitig eine völlige Dissonanz von Regierungsversprechen oder im öffentlichen Diskurs sich widerspiegelnder Haltung und offensichtlichem Handeln. Dieser Rechtsruck wird meiner Meinung nach nicht zu stoppen sein, wenn die Regierungen die illegale Migration nicht unter Kontrolle bringen. Ich bin nämlich überzeugt davon, dass Antisemitismus mit dieser Migration positiv korreliert. Ehemals muslimische SS-Divisionen, wie z.B. Handschar, werden verherrlicht und den Hitlergruß in iranischen Nationalbrigaden zu heben gehört nicht zur Seltenheit. Dieser religiös-begründete Judenhass gepaart mit dem alt-institutionalisierten Rassenwahn und Stereotypen in Europa könnte sich erneut in einer Gemengelage abbilden, die sich explosiv entlädt."
