Evaluating effectiveness of the app-based system "CARIMO" to promote physical activity for people in need of care

Provision of adequate and reliable long-term care (LTC) for older people and for people with chronic health conditions faces severe challenges on both the supply side and the demand side. The demand of LTC is predicted to increase in aging societies. On the other hand, estimates of supply of LTC – formal as well as informal care – suggest a shortage of carers.

The project „CiM-Care in Movement“, coordinated by “Salzburg Research“, aimed to (i) develop an ICT-based system to promote physical activity of older people, to (ii) improve knowledge of carers and information exchange between formal and informal carers. It also aimed to (iii) set up a time bank to encourage volunteering. The “CiM-System” was tested in Austria (Salzburg) and Northern Italy in 2018.

„CiM-Outcomes“: The WU Research Institute for Economics of Aging was responsible for evaluating the CiM-system by focussing on the effectiveness of the ICT-solution. To be more specific, “CiM-Outcomes” dealt with three research topics:  

  • The impact of the CiM-system on physical activity and quality of life of older people

  • The usefulness of ICT-based care guidelines and courses for informal carers and volunteers

  • The effect of the CiM-system on information exchange between formal and informal carers

  • The influence of time banks on the willingness to volunteer

We used qualitative and quantitative research methods.
