Nathania Chua is a post-doctoral research associate of the Institute for Responsibility and Sustainability in Global Business at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna), investigating the role of purpose in organizations with support from the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). She completed her PhD at ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain under the Department of Society, Politics and Sustainability. During this time, Nathania was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Organization Studies, WU Vienna.  Prior to her doctoral studies, she was a lecturer at the John Gokongwei School of Management of the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines, wherein she also obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Management with a minor in Music Literature.

Research

Nathania’s main research interests lie within the intersection of social responsibility, work and organization theory. Through her research, she seeks to understand how actors purposefully work and collectively act to create social change on the organizational and institutional level. In her doctoral dissertation, she employed qualitative methods to investigate the work of agents of change within the contexts of collective action and service-learning, applying a social-symbolic work perspective. Her latest research project revolves around purpose and what this means for businesses today. Nathania has presented her work at major academic conferences such as the Academy of Management and the European Group for Organization Studies. She has served as a reviewer for the Academy of Management Review and Journal of Management Education.

Teaching

Nathania has primarily taught core courses of CSR & Sustainability and Business in Society at the Masters level. She has also been part of the teaching team in a variety of electives across different programs at ESADE, such as the MSc elective “Leading Towards Sustainable Futures”, the CEMS elective “Understanding Mindsets, Values and Rules through Religious Tradition”, the BBA elective “Ethnographic Sensibility as a Tool for Social Change”, and “Racial (In)Justice” for the MBA. Before that, Nathania taught Business Statistics to undergraduate Management students at the Ateneo de Manila University.
