Research Talk by Gerald Häubl, University of Alberta (CA)

18/11/2024

In November 2024, we had the pleasure of hosting Gerald Häubl from the University of Alberta (CA), who presented his recent working paper at our brown bag seminar. His research delves into the dynamics of how prior preferences and the timing of consumption influence the updating of preferences and subsequent choices when individuals are presented with a default nudge. Häubl and his colleagues discovered that the positive downstream effects of default nudges manifest only when consumption occurs immediately and when initial preferences are inconsistent with the default option. This study holds significant implications for both theoretical frameworks and practical applications, underscoring the necessity of considering preference heterogeneity and temporal dynamics in the design of effective default nudges.
