TheUrinal – How to get rid of smelly toilets

30/06/2024

Winter Semester 2023 / The Urinal

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The aim of this project course is to enhance the sanitary experience in public restrooms, specifically addressing the challenges associated with maintaining clean urinals. Our contention is that ensuring cleanliness reflects positively on an organization. Traditional cleaning methods are labor-intensive, and despite efforts, maintaining cleanliness is an ongoing challenge. Our solution, TheUrinal®, is designed to be self-cleaning, addressing the persistent issue of unhygienic conditions in public restrooms.

Goal

The primary objective is to improve restroom conditions by addressing the root cause, which is urine splatter. Scientific studies indicate that urine can splash up to a meter sideways from conventional urinals. TheUrinal® focuses on understanding and rectifying the limitations of existing solutions to create a more effective and hygienic alternative.

Methodology

The lean-startup methodology has been employed for the systematic and iterative development of our business. Through the utilization of this approach, efforts have been directed towards constructing a minimum viable product and conducting market tests to gather feedback. The insights obtained from these tests have allowed for the adaptation of our strategy and optimization of the product. At this early stage, the project is not yet ready for mass production and continues to rely on prototypes. The focus has been distinctly placed on the construction and improvement of physical prototypes, achieved through the use of easily formable materials such as expanded polystyrene and coatings like clay.

Results

First prototypes have shown, that TheUrinal® is able to cut off the leading cause of smelly bathrooms – backsplashes. This is enabled by its unique design and in combination with an innovative soap system our innovation can even reduce half of the cleaning costs. In addition to that, the system works waterless which leads to zero waste of valuable drinking-water. Our startup is expecting very healthy profits, as we can rely on a solid financial model. Compared to our competition, we can generate revenue not only from selling our patented product but also from future profits of our soap business.
