Prof. Bodo B. Schlegelmilch and his coauthors Sandra Awanis from Indonesia and Charles Cui from China, who both work in the UK, just published a paper on Asian materialists. Extant research overwhelmingly focused on the “dark side” of materialism that promotes a stigmatized view of self-oriented materialists who reject collective values and goals. In contrast, the authors argue that particularly in Asian cultures, there is a brighter side to materialism as well. They show that collective-oriented materialism enables compliance with social expectations, demonstrates belongingness to a desired reference group, and fulfils perceived social responsibilities.
