Digital humanism in practice - How is AI implemented ethically? How is value-based engineering rolled out with ISO/IEEE 24748-7000?

Sarah Spiekermann-Hoff

Organisation: Sarah Spiekermann-Hoff

AI poses enormous challenges for our society. How can our organizations benefit from AI, but at the same time introduce IT systems in a more human-centric, participatory and democratic way than has been the case in the past 20 years? In other words: How can we really build technology FOR humanity? Value-based engineering was standardized in 2022 in the first globally ratified standard for ethical system design (ISO/IEEE 24748-7000). Now this can be the way to realize digital humanism in practice.

We would like to invite you to find out what is happening here in Vienna, in Austria, in organizations that use AI. And how can you become part of this movement yourself? This event will inform you.

Inaugural workshop

As announced at the WU Research Encounters event in January (thank you again, Susann Fiedler and everyone for organizing it!), we are building a network of WU scholars who are doing research on (or are planning to) AI technologies, AI applications, and impact of AI. Two major aims are improving internal and external visibility of the AI expertise available at WU – and the exciting things you are working on! That being said, we want to hear from you what would make a WU Applied AI Network valuable to you!

To this end, we are organizing the inaugural workshop on June 6, 4-6pm, D4.0.022. We will follow up with a more detailed agenda closer to the workshop.

Please register here if you plan to attend. If you cannot attend but have ideas, input, suggestions, please reach out to us at applied-ai-network@wu.ac.at

We hope to see you there!

The Digital Euro

Organisation: Verena Dorner

In the WU matters.WU talks. series.
The euro was introduced as book money 25 years ago, and it has played a key role in European integration ever since. A further milestone was reached in 2002 with the introduction of euro cash. However, there is still no uniform European standard for digital payments. What does this mean for Europe’s competitiveness? When will the digital euro be launched? And how can it serve as a platform for innovation and growth? Experts from the OeNB and WU explain how the interoperable system increases efficiency and reduces costs, breaks down barriers, and builds trust, thus boosting product development in business.

Symposium: Automatisierung der Arbeit – Chancen und Risiken des Einsatzes Künstlicher Intelligenz im Betrieb

Susanne Auer-Mayer; Andreas Tinhofer

WU Research Encounters – Uniting AI Insights Across Disciplines

Susann Fiedler

Organisation: Susann Fiedler & FoKo & Vice Rektorat of Research & 3rd Mission

WU's 11 departments provide a great ground for interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly in the dynamic field of Artificial Intelligence. In an attempt to make such interdisciplinary exchange easier, we are delighted to invite you for the 1st "WU Research Encounters" a joint initiative of the VR Research & Third Mission and FoKo dedicated to exploring AI through the diverse perspectives of our WU community.

This event will connect various academic disciplines, enhancing our collective grasp of Artificial Intelligence and its wide-ranging consequences. The event will feature several flash talks (~ 8 mins each), offering a glimpse into the current research of WU-based scholars. It's an opportunity to identify potential synergies and overlaps in our work. Following the talks, we invite you to enjoy some relaxed networking over a glass of water or wine and some finger food. Feel free to bring this invitation to the attention of fellow WU colleagues who may be interested in joining us for this event.
