The Role of Science: Driver or Driven?

07/04/2022

The VBV Vorsorgekasse hosted a series of online discussions on the role of media, NGOs, and science. André Martinuzzi discussed with Franz Fischler, Niki Popper, and Helga Kromp-Kolb, among others.

For several years, the VBV Vorsorgekasse has organized the "VBV in Discourse" series, inviting experts and thought leaders to discuss various topics in the context of sustainable economic practices. Moderated by Gabriele Faber-Wiener, the focus on April 7, 2022, was the role of science, exploring questions such as "Have we lost faith in science?", "Who decides what is researched?" and "How can trust in science be strengthened?". Insights and a multitude of new ideas were provided by Franz Fischler (former EU Commissioner, Honorary President of the Eco-social Forum), Helga Kromp-Kolb (climate researcher), Nikolas Popper (simulation researcher), Juliane Reinecke (Professor at King's College London), and André Martinuzzi (head of the Institute for Sustainability Management).

André Martinuzzi highlighted that "Many people perceive sustainability only as a form of renunciation. To make the positive aspects of a sustainable life tangible, we would need a virtual sustainability land, like Disneyland in Paris, but sustainable and visitable with VR glasses. Together with young people from all over Europe, we could compile the vision of a sustainable life in all its aspects and make sustainability tangible."
