Cooperatives as a Response to the Challenges of the Digital Economy: A Study of SMEs in Platform-Based Value Chains

This study examines how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in industries whose value chains are heavily based on online platforms deal with the resulting challenges and potential dependencies. The focus is on the question of the extent to which cooperative models can be used as instruments to counteract such dependencies. Qualitative and quantitative research methods are used to answer this question. The results of these empirical studies are then embedded in a larger theoretical context, to systematically categorize and analyze the observed (platform) cooperative approaches.
