Peter Vandor and Michaela Neumayer have published an article on civil society and social capital in Central and Eastern Europe in Springer Verlag's online encyclopaedia "International Encyclopedia of Civil Society". They shed light on the importance and diversity of civil society in the various states of this region. They show that it is insufficient to look at this region only through the lens of post-communism, as this only provides an incomplete picture of civil society today. It is important to include recent social and political developments as well as the growing influence of the EU, especially among the candidate countries, in the analysis of civil society.
