Florentine Maier researches the impacts of democratic and managerial forms of organizing, and the possibilities of integrating both forms to strengthen organisational and macro-level governance. Her work centers on cooperatives and nonprofit organizations. As part of the Civic Life of Cities Lab, she examines civil society in cities. In her teaching, she engages both students and practitioners on topics related to general and nonprofit management, with a current emphasis on sustainability transitions and psychosocial resilience in the face of ongoing crises.

Prior to her habilitation in business administration (2018), she completed doctoral studies in social sciences and economics with a focus on human resource management, as well as a master's degree in commerce and Chinese language at WU. Furthermore, she studied Sinology and Chinese language at the University of Vienna and Dr. Sun Yat-Sen University (People's Republic of China) and was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Stanford University.
