In addition to the general theoretical foundations of social policy, the Social Policy Institute (SP) is primarily concerned with three fields of research: Poverty and Inequality, Health and Care, Economics of Social Services. For each of these lines of research, a number of different questions are examined, which are answered with the help of a broad spectrum of social and economic theories and using a wide variety of quantitative and qualitative methods. In addition, three cross-cutting issues are given special consideration in each of the three lines of research: Europe, Gender and Aging.

The Group of Health Economics and Policy (HEP) of the Institute focuses in particular on research and teaching in the field of economic policy in health and health care. 

The Institute for Social Policy is also actively involved in the following research institutes:
