The dissertation makes use of advances in automated text analysis to craft a map of the role civil society plays in Austrian society. Overall, the results suggest that civil society's potential to contribute to better democratic governance is underexploited in Austria. The presence and legitimacy of civil society in the public arena are low compared to the role of politicians and business actors. Therefore, it seems all the more important to leverage automated text analysis to make civil society more visible and better connect actors working towards similar goals.
