The Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have exerted massive pressure on economies around the world, driving up inflation to levels not seen for decades. The newly developed strategy frameworks of central banks are currently put to a stress test whose outcomes are yet unknown.
Central banks are facing again the perennial dilemma between fighting inflation with contractionary policies and supporting struggling economies with expansionary policies. Philipp Hildebrand, former Chairman of the Swiss National Bank and current Vice Chairman of BlackRock, the world’s biggest asset management firm, will provide his views on these major policy challenges.
Mr. Hildebrand joined BlackRock as Vice Chairman in 2012. Prior to that, he served as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Swiss National Bank
(SNB) and was also Member of the Board of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and the Swiss Governor of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Previously, Mr. Hildebrand was Chief Investment Officer of a Swiss private bank and a partner at Moore Capital Management in London.
He holds an MA from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva and a DPhil from the University of Oxford.
The public lecture is jointly organized by Aurel Schubert, Honorary Professor at WU Vienna and former Director General Statistics, ECB and by Guido Schäfer, Department of Economics, WU Vienna.
