The Department of Economics at WU cordially invites you to our lecture “The Nobel Prize in Layperson’s Terms” to be held on Tuesday, January 18, at 6:00 pm, at WU, Festsaal 2.

Please join us in welcomingAndrea Weber, Professor of Economics at CEU, who will explain the contributions of the recent Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. The recent award recognizes the discovery of methods for analyzing natural experiments as a source of knowledge in economics. It went to David Card "for his empirical contributions to labor economics", the Joshua D. Angrist and Guido W. Imbens "for their methodological contributions to the analysis of causal relationships." This approach has played an important role in the credibility revolution and has greatly enhanced the ability of researchers to answer important questions.

Andrea Weber is one of the most successful and distinguished economists in Austria. She is an outspoken expert in the field honored by the Nobel Prize Committee, and she publishes regularly in top-tier journals on topics in labor economics and applied econometrics. In addition, she serves as an editor at the Journal of Public Economics, among others, and has recently joined the editorial board at the Journal of the European Economic Association. Notably, she is also a co-author of several works with David Card. We are very pleased that she will be giving the keynote lecture at our event.

General information about the lecture series: Nobel Prizes are awarded every year in December, on the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. Nobel laureates are celebrated in the media, but hardly anyone knows anything about the research that goes on behind the scenes. We want to change that. In cooperation with experts, we are introducing the work of the winners of each year’s Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in terms that even laypeople can understand. We analyze the innovative power of the work and discuss its significance and potential applications in practice.
