Writing Retreat: Three Days Dedicated to Advancing Your Next PhD Publication

17/09/2023

Our Writing Retreat provides an opportunity for PhD students to dedicate focused effort on their academic publications and to benefit from multiple rounds of feedback from high-level academics.

This course is specifically designed for PhD candidates who have surpassed the introductory stages of academic writing and are actively engaged in producing scholarly works such as journal articles, conference papers, or book chapters. Set against the tranquil backdrop of the Styrian Alps, the retreat offers a serene, distraction-free environment conducive to writing. This setting allows participants to fully immerse themselves in their work, free from the usual interruptions and pressures, facilitating significant advancements in their projects.

The course supervisors, Andre Martinuzzi, Rodrigo Lozano, and Markus Hameter, provide in-depth feedback on structure, argumentation, and stylistic elements. It is important to note that the retreat focuses on the structure, argumentation and writing style of scholarly work rather than on the content, which should be addressed in research seminars at WU Vienna. Furthermore, the Writing Retreat does not focus on developing a PhD research proposal. To ensure personalized and intensive mentorship, attendance is limited to ten select PhD students each semester.

Feedback from last semester's participants:

"The retreat's format of three consecutive days was incredibly effective, facilitating notable progress."

"The coaching was exceptionally targeted and invaluable for addressing specific challenges."

"The atmosphere was uplifting, with the engaging instructors motivating all attendees and fostering a highly productive working environment."

The upcoming Writing Retreat is scheduled for October 2024. Interested PhD students are encouraged to express their interest by emailing Svetlana.Ivanova@wu.ac.at.
