New publication on inequalities in childcare in Vienna

02/08/2024

A new study by Astrid Pennerstorfer, co-authored with Dieter Pennerstorfer and Michaela Neumayr, examines what causes inequalities in the availability of childcare places in Vienna. It shows that it is primarily independent (often smaller) non-profit providers and church providers that offer childcare in residential areas with a higher socio-economic status and that these services are also more expensive there. Public providers, on the other hand, are more frequently located in neighbourhoods with a lower status and therefore have an equalising effect. The study has been published in the journal Urban Studies and can be accessed at this link (open access).
