We are inviting applications for a fully funded PhD Candidate position at the Institute for Corporate Governance of the Department of Strategy and Innovation at Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU). This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in research that explores a wide array of issues related to innovative and effective corporate governance. These include, but are not limited to, financial economics, corporate reporting and disclosure, and (managerial) accounting. Using quantitative empirical methods, our research examines the implications of these focus areas on capital markets, internal control systems, and incentive contracting.

What to expect

One-third of the allocated working hours is specifically dedicated to the academic development of the PhD candidate, with the objective of achieving a Doctorate or PhD. Collaborating closely with the team at the Institute for Corporate Governance and under the mentorship of the dissertation committee, the candidate is expected to develop and execute her/his own independent research projects. We place a strong emphasis on fostering dialogue with the broader research community. Thus, we offer strong support for the presentation of research projects at international conferences and workshops, with the aim of publishing in top-tier journals.

Additional tasks:

Advanced Academic Engagement: Active participation in the PhD or Doctoral program to deepen and extend academic and methodological expertise.

Research Projects: Taking a lead role in the conceptualization, planning, and implementation of research projects aligned with the Institute's research agenda.

Event & Conference Coordination: Support the planning and execution of academic events, including conferences and seminars, that facilitate the scientific dialogue.

Industry Collaboration: Engaging in purpose-driven projects through close partnerships with national and international firms to apply theoretical insights to real-world challenges.

Teaching & Guided Self-Learning: Organize and conduct lectures, as well as develop teaching materials and case studies that contribute to the Institute's learning environment.

What you have to offer

Academic Qualifications: Diploma or Master's degree in Business and Economics, qualifying for enrollment in a Doctoral/PhD program at WU.

Subject-Matter Expertise: Profound knowledge in the fields of accounting, corporate governance, or related disciplines.

Prior Research Experience: Demonstrated ability for scientific work, evidenced by an outstanding diploma or master's thesis, and an excellent academic record.

Methodology Skills: Prior experience in empirical research and statistical methods, with tools such as R, Stata, Python, or SPSS, or a background in empirical project work, is a plus.

Language Proficiency: Very good written and spoken English.

• Ability to work cohesively in a team setting, with qualities of enthusiasm, creativity, and reliability.

Work Habits: Ability to work in a structured and independent manner.

Interpersonal Skills: High level of social competence and communication skills.

Research & Teaching Interests: A keen interest in teaching and research in the fields of corporate governance, strategy, management, or accounting.

Innovative Teaching Methods: Willingness to employ and adapt to multimedia teaching and learning formats.

The minimum monthly gross salary amounts to €2.457,98 (14 times per year). This salary may be adjusted based on job-related prior work experience. In addition, we offer a wide range of attractive social benefits.
