Over the last decades, Austria has established itself as an attractive HQ location for many international corporations, which have chosen Austria as home for their HQs. In particular, Austria’s privileged position in the heart of Europe makes the location particularly appealing not only for corporate HQs, but also for intermediary HQs, such as regional HQs of international firms. The Austrian economy strongly benefits from the concentration of multinational corporations within its territory, because HQs perform strategic activities, employ high-qualified personnel, and generate additional tax income. For Austria, it is crucial to understand how the current HQ situation looks like and how the location can become even more attractive in the future. In this way, the country will be able to retain and strengthen its status as an important HQ location within Europe.

With our work, we aim at providing a clear and comprehensive view of the Austrian HQ landscape. Our first results will consist of a high-quality list of HQs in Austria and a report on (re)location patterns of HQs in Austria. The results will be published in early 2022.
