The New Silk Road as a Door-Opener to the Markets of Central and Eastern Europe

08/05/2018

Arnold Schuh, the Director of the Center, was invited to give a speech on the “Symposium on New Markets for Hong Kong Electrical Appliance Industries”.

In his presentation on “One Belt One Road (OBOR) as a Door-Opener to the Markets of Central and Eastern Europe” he shed light on the role of Southeastern and Central European countries as markets and entry points to Europe for Chinese firms in the context of the OBOR/BRI/16+1 Initiative. Although the Chinese initiatives under the “16+1” cooperation framework have not fully met the ambitious goals so far, China is now more visible as investor and trade partner in the region. A further deepening of the China-Europe cooperation depends on advancing mutual trust through dialogue, learning about each other’s way of doing business and respect for EU rules.
